Internet Access
| As you may have noticed, the
telephone and cable companies have been
pushing their "high speed"
internet access quite hard, yet
neglecting, the whole time, to tell the
consumer the truth. |
 |
The same truth that would cost them
billions of dollars, if it wasn't for
their brilliant million dollar publicity
campaign, to convince everyone that there
is no other option but them. |
| First off, the fifty plus dollars per
month that they are charging people, is a
result of marketing, and not necessity.
They are doing their best to convince
consumers that we all need this new
technology, when in fact, we really
don't. Oh sure, it's great if you use a
web cam all day, but if all |
| you want to do on the internet is
check your email, read a few pages every
now and then, why should you need a high
speed connection. It's kind of like
renting a Ferari so that you can drive it
to the store for a quart of milk. Does
anyone need milk that fast? Lots of
speed, but do you really need it? And at
what cost? Is it really worth it? |
 |
| Next is the fact that, even though
your computer is equipped with everything
that you need to get online, they are
trying to convince everyone that it's not
that simple. If they can create a
problem, then they can create the
solution. If they can sell or rent
hardware to you, they can make a buck or
two. |
 |
They are even trying to convince the
computer manufacturers to build the
"new" high speed modems right
into the machine. Tack on an extra couple
of bucks for that feature, in a world
where the price of computers should be
coming down. |
| Since the power of the new generation
computers has been steadily rising, the
dialup modem has become even more
efficient as well. A 56K dialup modem is
now standard equipment in almost all
desktop and even the majority of laptop
computers. There is a reason for this.
The manufacturers have not forgotten the
consumer, despite the constant attempts
to persuade them otherwise by the cable
and phone companies. They realize that
the existing technology is more than
adequate for the majority of the
population, for now, and they should keep
it available to the consumer. Otherwise
they would have done away with dial up
modems long ago.
